What is A Chapter House?

Historically, chapter houses have been integral components of religious communities, with roots tracing back to the medieval period. Originating in the 11th century, these structures were associated with monastic orders and cathedrals, serving as multifunctional spaces for congregational gatherings. The chapter house was central to the governance of the community, acting as a venue for discussions on matters of discipline, the allocation of tasks, and communal planning.

Throughout the centuries, chapter houses remained hubs for spiritual and intellectual exchange, nurturing a sense of unity among clergy. Valuable manuscripts and archives found a home within these walls, contributing to the preservation of knowledge. Over time, the chapter house evolved to adapt to changing societal norms and religious practices. Although its prominence diminished with the decline of monasticism, the historical legacy of chapter houses endures, representing a tangible link to the communal and administrative aspects of religious life in the medieval world.

Testimonials

"I visited the Chapter House as a stranger and came away with friends. You can go to a conference for the masses or retreat into the woods. Or you can join a houseful of pilgrims, around a table of great food, curated atmosphere to arouse curiosity, and rich conversation about the tension and opportunities within reach. This is some of THE BEST hospitality and leadership I have found in 25 years of ministry!"
Dave Sunde
Pastor, Mission Hills Church
"The Chapter House provides incredible opportunities to gather with other pastors and leaders to learn, dream, and problem-solve. I have been encouraged and challenged, especially by the kingdom perspective that Dave McDonald brings as he gathers people from all different faith traditions and aspects of ministry."
Kaye Kolde
Bishop, Free Methodist Church USA
"The Chapter house brings together Pastors and ministry leaders from different walks of life and denominational views to help create a ministry think tank. The "treasure chest" of ideas deposited and experiences shared enables ministry leaders to go back to their respective areas with new and fresh insights."
Fred Parker, Jr.
Senior Pastor, Kingdom Life Ministries
